The Saturday Sauté

Buffalo Chicken Dip

This party-pleasing dip is offers an alternative to messy buffalo wings. A perfect appetizer for your March Madness parties!

Spring is upon us. Time for longer days, a lot of rain, and allergy medicine. This week also marked the beginning of March Madness! It's one of my favorite times of year: exciting games, major upsets, fun parties and delicious food. This month, I'm going to feature appetizers all made with bacon. I've actually been pressured for awhile to have a month of bacon, and I finally caved. I figured with all the March Madness parties, this would be a great time to do it. I mean, bacon goes so well with sports and beer! This week's recipe was a huge hit at a party last weekend. It was a much larger hit than I expected and was inhaled! My fantastic friend Rich even asked for the recipe, and he doesn't cook much. Point being, this is so loved that it…

Generals Hold off Jags

Clinch fourth place seed in District tourney

The Washington-Lee Generals entered last night’s match against the Falls Church Jaguars with a must win mentality.  The Jaguars were fresh off a big win over the Wakefield Warriors, which moved them into fifth place in the National District standings. Head coach Bobby Dobson knew that with his team pretty much a lock for fourth, that they would be facing the Jags in next week’s opening round of the National District tournament, and that the only question was where the game would be held. “We really needed this one,” Dobson said.  “The District is so wide open, anyone can beat anyone.  Home court advantage is huge for us.” The Washington-Lee Generals echoed their coach’s sentiment with their play on the court.  They came out intent on …

Patriots and Generals Win 2 of 3 in a Critical Week of District Play

Washington-Lee (8-10, 6-5) It was an good week for the Washington-Lee Generals, who earned two important wins over Stuart and Hayfield, before losing to the first place Edison Eagles.  Jonah Sens led the way with 19 points in the 56-46 win over last place Stuart. In Wednesday night’s 50-47 victory at Hayfield, Andrew Karpinski hit the game winning 3-pointer with time winding down.  At 6-5 in district play, the Generals sit in fourth place, one win better than Wakefield entering the final week.  The two face off next Thursday in a game that could be pivotal for playoff positioning.  The Generals will first have to focus on Falls Church, who defeated Wakefield and lost to Yorktown by one this week. Yorktown Patriots (13-7, 9-3) It was an up …

Washington-Lee Overcomes Slow Start to Beat Hayfield

Andrew Karpinski hits game winning three-pointer with time winding down

The Washington-Lee Generals earned a vital win on the road Wednesday, defeating the Hayfield Hawks 50-47.  The Generals really struggled offensively to start and finish the game, but a solid stretch of play on both sides of the halftime break and a solid defensive effort throughout allowed them to eek out the nail biter.  Andrew Karpinski, Antoine Ingram and Ian Cole all finished with 10 points, while Jack Beckman and Jonah Sens added eight points each to the balanced General attack. When Washington-Lee hosted Hayfield in late December, they dominated the game winning 60-35.  However on this night, it appeared that the Generals had underestimated the feisty Hawks, who have played spoiler in recent weeks, pulling off three upsets since …

Patriots Suffer Crushing Defeat to Mount Vernon

Third loss in five games takes Yorktown out of first place

When the Yorktown Patriots traveled to Mount Vernon in the first week of January, both teams were an undefeated 3-0 in conference play.  While the Patriots won that match 60-51, they did so against a Mount Vernon team that was without their leader Jesse Konadu.  This time around, Yorktown came in tied with Edison for first place, one game ahead of Mount Vernon.  On this night, it was the Majors who elevated their game and took home the convincing 77-61 victory, led by Konadu’s season-high 33 points.  Jack Earley led the Patriots with 18 in defeat, and Daniel Pietropaoli and Kevin Bailey added 14 and 13 respectively. Yorktown came out of the gates strong, hitting seven of their first eight shots from the field.  After hitting a three-…

Yorktown Holds off Late Rally to Defeat Falls Church

Patriots overcome poor start to win by 1.

The Yorktown Patriots came out sluggish Monday night, but were able to survive an off-night of shooting, and several second half rallies by the scrappy Falls Church Jaguars to win 52-51.  Daniel Pietorpaoli led a balanced Patriot attack with 13 points.  Kevin Bailey added nine, and three other Patriots scored eight.  Falls Church’s Nizar Alamin led all scorers with 24 points. The Patriots have not been playing their best ball as of late.  After being blown out by Edison two weeks ago they responded with a dominating win over Wakefield.  Coming off a heartbreaking loss to rival Washington-Lee, it was tough to tell which Yorktown team would come to play.  Early on, it did not look good for the Patriot faithful. It was unclear whether the …

Strong Second Half Lifts Lady Patriots to Victory

Yorktown girls complete season sweep over Arlington rivals

The Yorktown Lady Patriots kept up theire winning ways in the National District with a 55-35 win over Washington-Lee Tuesday.  Freshman Hayley Molnar led the way with a season-high 15 points, including 11 in the final quarter.    Senior Brooke Huffman also had a season high with 13 points, and Tricia Leano added nine.  Emma Cooper led the Generals with 12 points, and Brianna Hogan scored 11 in defeat.  When these two teams met at Yorktown in December, the Patriots were able to narrowly escape with the three-point victory, and that was with senior leader Lena Negri, who missed last night’s game with an injury.  If the first half of the rematch, it looked as if late game heroics may be in order again, as the lead went back forth and neither …

General Pull Out Thrilling Victory Over Patriots

Ian Cole scores game winner with 3.2 seconds left

Exactly one week after winning a nail biter over the Wakefield Warriors, the Washington-Lee Generals pulled off another dramatic win, this time defeating arch rival Yorktown 60-57.   Senior Andrew Karpinksy led the Generals with 16 points, while Jack Beckman and Jonah Sens added 12 and 10, respectively.   Although he only finished with three points, Ian Cole had what proved to be the play of the game with a steal and layup in the final seconds.  Jack Early had a game-high 20 points in defeat. The atmosphere of the packed Washington-Lee gym was fully charged, as the respective student sections of each team filled the stands on opposing baselines, screaming cheers back and forth at each other.   The players responded with great intensity …

Boys High School Weekly Round-Up

Tough week for the Warriors. Generals and Patriots go 1-1

Wakefield Warriors (6-10, 3-5) The Wakefield Warriors entered the week at 3-3 in the National District, preparing to play both of their Arlington Rivals. Tuesday, they hosted Washington-Lee in the game to determine fourth place at the midway point of the district schedule.  Although the riveting game went back and forth, the Warriors fell 72-69. Friday, they traveled to Yorktown, where redemption would not be easy to find.  A six-point first quarter put the Warriors in a hole early, and they were never able to climb back into contention, falling 62-46.  They will look to get back on track with an easier game at Stuart, before hosting Mount Vernon in a vital game for playoff positioning. Washington-Lee Generals (6-9, 4-4) The Generals …
