BikeArlington program manager to answer questions about sharing the road and more in an online chat Wednesday.
Chris Eatough, a BikeArlington program manager, will answer questions about sharing Arlington's streets and bike, pedestrian and driver safety during an online chat at noon Wednesday. The monthly chat is part of the Arlington County Department of Environmental Services' Ask the Expert series. This month's topic is street safety. Past events have focused on recycling, streets and snow, and other areas. The department launched the series in November in hopes of better engaging members of the community. The next Capital Bikeshare stop will open Thursday and more than 30 are proposed.
A new Capital Bikeshare station will open on Columbia Pike this week. The system’s 200th station will open at 9 a.m. Thursday at the Walter Reed Community Center, 2909 16th St. S. The station is part of Bikeshare’s expansion into South Arlington, with 33 new stations planned in the Columbia Pike and Shirlington areas for 2013. The service has over 18,000 annual members and 221,000 casual members, according to its website. BikeArlington and Capital Bikeshare have released a map of the proposed new locations (above). Hundreds of students participated in the event that encourages students to walk or bike to school.
Oakridge Elementary School fourth-grader Julia Murray celebrated Walk/Bike to School Day Wednesday by riding to school on her lavender bike with her mother alongside her. “Walking or biking gives you exercise,” said Julia, who is 9. Julia routinely walks to school with her mom, Laura, but said that she rode the bus to school over the summer for a weekend program. Her take on the bus: “It was so boring.” The Murray family and hundreds of Arlington Public Schools students participated in the national Walk/Bike to School Day event sponsored by the Partnership for a Walkable America. Friday was Bike to Work Day.
The Ballston Business Improvement District was out bright and early Friday to celebrate a new Capital Bikeshare station and promote Bike to Work Day. The BID, as it is called, planted itself in front of Freshbikes, 3924 Wilson Blvd., giving away aluminum water bottles and bicycle-friendly water bags. People signed up for a raffle to win one of two iPods or autographed Washington Capitals gear — including a jersey signed by the 2011-12 team, a puck signed by Mike Green and a hockey stick signed by Alex Ovechkin. Winners will be announced Sunday at the Taste of Arlington. Bike share seems to be working out well but a couple of observations: 1) It doesn't take cars off the road. Bike Share has replaced walking. 2) The bikes end up traveling on sidewalks a lot of the time. 3) The bikes make driving more difficult. 4) The red bike riders rarely wear protective head gear. Other than that I would deem Bike Share a complete success. more ›
