House, Senate Nominees on Primary Ballots Today

Low turnout expected today.

Voters today will decide who is on the ballot for congressional races that will be decided in November. In the Democratic primary, incumbent U.S. Rep. Jim Moran faces political newcomer Bruce Shuttleworth of Arlington in Virginia's 8th Congressional District. Voters who choose to participate in today's Republican primary will weigh in on one of the hottest Senate races in the country and pick the GOP candidate to face Democrat Tim Kaine in November. Shortly before 11:30 a.m., Arlington County Registrar Linda Lindberg was trying to fight off boredom. "I think it's going to be another light turnout day for us," Lindberg said. "The phones have not been busy for us at all — either from the precincts or from the voters." Lindberg said she …

Tuesday: Voters Decide Primary Battles for U.S. Senate, House

Republican primary to decide the party's Senate nominee; Democratic primary will determine the House candidate for November.

Voters on Tuesday will decide two congressional primaries that will determine who appears on the November ballot, sure to get plenty of attention thanks to Virginia's status as a battleground for the U.S. presidency. Voters who choose to cast ballots in the Democratic primary on Tuesday will determine whether incumbent U.S. Rep. Jim Moran, a Democrat, moves one step closer to a 12th term. Political newcomer Bruce Shuttleworth is challenging Moran in the Democratic primary. The winner will face Republican Patrick Murray in November. People who elect to vote in Tuesday's Republican primary will have a say in one of the hottest Senate races in the country. That four-way contest — between Ex-Sen. George Allen, tea party leader Jamie Radtke, …

I will not hold my nose again and vote for Jim Moran today. He has squandered major opportunities to help everyone in his district in order to serve his own interests and his pet special interests, including the financial interests of family members. What is especially aggravating - he is never seen in his district except just before an election. His district is across the Potomac from the …   more ›

Moran Seeks 12th Term, Faces Newcomer in Primary

Northern Virginia congressman says his seniority benefits constituents.

Since 1990, when Rep. Jim Moran was first elected to Congress, ‘80s music has lost its popularity, come back in style and is on its way out again. A lot can happen in 22 years, the time Moran has spent serving in Congress. It’s the seniority gained over that time, said Moran, a Democrat representing Virginia’s 8th District, that allows him to influence legislation beneficial to the people of Northern Virginia and is the reason why he deserves a 12th term in the U.S. House of Representatives. While Moran’s critics say a fresh face is needed in Congress, he maintains that his seniority works for the benefit of his constituency. “For lack of a better method, people’s ability to influence the priorities and the direction of the Congress is …

Shuttleworth was originally sponsored by a Texas Republican PAC, which subsequently dropped him. A USNA-grad Navy pilot has up to a fourteen-year service obligation (this is actually explicit in statutes and Navy regulations), but Shuttleworth was released after the “basic 8.” Shuttleworth has literally no local political, policy or government record at all, and hasn’t even been actively employed…   more ›

Political Newcomer Hopes to Unseat Moran in Democratic Primary

Arlington resident Bruce Shuttleworth is a former Navy fighter pilot.

Bruce Shuttleworth knows it takes hard work and tenacity for a political newcomer to edge out a 22-year incumbent congressman. Despite long odds and a funding gap that favors Democratic primary opponent Rep. Jim Moran, Shuttleworth thinks he’s got what it takes to win. “In 12 years of living here, I did not meet many people who enjoyed voting for my competitor, and without any prompting, quite a few people said they wanted a fresh perspective,” Shuttleworth told Patch. “And so I’m going to test that, and we’ll see how that works out. "Clearly, he has the experiential advantage over me, but I think I bring the power of a fresh perspective, and energy and commitment, to these issues that clearly are life and death to me,” he said. …

Independent Candidate for Congress Campaigns on a Shoestring

Arlington resident Jason Howell has less than $10,000 in the campaign bank and needs 1,000 signatures by June 12 to get on the ballot.

Arlington resident Jason Howell isn't letting incumbent Congressman Jim Moran's sizable war chest of nearly half-a-million dollars get in the way of running for Congress. Howell's got less than $10,000 in the bank for his campaign, so he's hitting every local barbecue, 5k and neighborhood meeting he can to help get the word out. Standing outside the Giant grocery store in Arlington's Cherrydale neighborhood over the weekend, Howell said hello to potential voters in what will likely be an uphill battle to try to unseat Moran, a Democrat who some say is gliding toward his 12th term since getting elected in 1990 to represent Virginia's 8th Congressional District. "My wife and I are doing the lion's share of signature-gathering," Howell said…

Of course, Mr Howell is vague. He appears to be a shill for Rep. Moran's campaign. I am amused that Jim thinks this foolishness is necessary to get him re-elected. Obama must be much weaker than reported in northern VA.   more ›

Moran Challenger Allowed on Ballot, in Reversal

Bruce Shuttleworth had claimed he was unlawfully left off the Democratic primary ballot.

The Virginia State Board of Elections announced Monday evening it would allow a Democratic primary challenger to U.S. Rep. Jim Moran on the ballot after initially disqualifying him. Bruce Shuttleworth, an Arlington resident, filed a lawsuit last week in the U.S. District Court for the Eastern District of Virginia. In the lawsuit, he claims Democratic Party officials failed to certify valid signatures his campaign collected from voters residing in the 8th Congressional District, leaving Moran the only candidate to be certified for the ballot. The Washington Post reported Monday evening that Justin Riemer, deputy secretary of the State Board of Elections, said the state Democratic party had certified Shuttleworth’s name. Riemer did not say …

Radle Quits Race for U.S. House

Democrat throws support behind challenger Bruce Shuttleworth.

Franconia Democrat Will Radle has ended his bid for a congressional seat and thrown his support behind former competitor Bruce Shuttleworth. Radle was running in the Democratic primary for the seat currently held by Democrat Rep. Jim Moran in Virginia’s 8th Congressional District. In a telephone interview Wednesday, he said he was putting the needs of the community ahead of his personal ambitions. “I don’t want to divide the opposition to the incumbent,” Radle said. Radle commended Shuttleworth, a Democrat, on his “commitment to service, past and present.” He also said he admired his “approach to listening to people (and) his general interest in helping to create solutions to challenges.” Radle said in an email Wednesday announcing his …
