The Arlington County Board on Saturday approved a 10-year financial roadmap for improving the county's streets, parks and water systems. The plan also sets aside money for major projects like a Columbia Pike streetcar and an aquatics and fitness facility at Long Bridge Park. The $2.45 billion Capital Improvement Plan, which is updated every two years, is designed to invest in Arlington's aging infrastructure and puts a priority on acquiring more land for parks and open space. Along with its unanimous approval, the board incorporated a $438 million Capital Improvement Plan by Arlington Public Schools, bringing the total spending outlay for the next decade to about $2.9 billion, according to a county news release. The Arlington County Board will decide the fate of several major projects — including a controversial streetcar proposed for the Columbia Pike corridor — and set spending priorities for the next decade before its summer recess. The county's $2.45 billion, 10-year Capital Improvement Plan is one of a long list of items the board will consider at its regular meeting Saturday. The Arlington County Board met Wednesday to discuss details of the proposed 10-year capital improvement plan, which will establish ways to pay for and build long-range projects and maintain the county's existing infrastructure. County Manager Barbara Donnellan released her proposal for a $2.4 billion plan in May. It includes investments in the Route 1 streetcar proposal and the Long Bridge Aquatics and Fitness facility. It also increases capital funding for street paving, parks and facility renovations. A full copy of the manager's proposal is available online.
