Arlington’s Central Library is one of many libraries around the country that pairs man’s best friend with kids looking to improve their reading skills.
Elementary school-aged children hoping to practice their reading skills have a willing audience at Central Library—trained therapy dogs from People Animals Love (PAL), a local animal therapy organization. Held twice a month, the Paws-to-Read program brings together children and dogs in 15-minute sessions. BizLaunch holds small business seminar at Arlington Central Library.
On Tuesday night, BizLaunch of Arlington Economic Development (AED) held a free small business seminar for local area residents in the auditorium of the Arlington Central Library, titled "Writing a Successful Business Plan." The event was a how-to seminar on writing a successful business plan, but for the 53 attendees, it also served as an introduction about what it takes to start a small business. The main speaker at seminar was Deric A. Mims, a Senior Vice President of SunTrust Bank. Mims has been a volunteer instructor and guest lecturer at small business seminars for more than 15 years. The Central Library of Arlington Public Libraries offers a special program for children in the Ballston and Virginia Square area. Storytime gives youth the opportunity to connect with books.
"Early literacy is not about teaching kids to read, but allowing them to get positive interactions with books," said Patricia Loverich, the youth services technology librarian of Arlington Public Library. Loverich has worked with the library for more than 10 years. Her big suggestion to parents is get kids associated with book early. Though you "can't expect [a baby] not to put a book in their mouth," Loverich said even this positive association with books is advantageous to a child's future literacy.
