One of the Kiwanis Club of Arlington's largest fundraisers for local charities and scholarships for students is back this year in a new format. In previous years, the Kiwanis Club organized an Oyster Feast and Barbecue each October that involved shucking oysters on the spot. “The work involved was very labor intensive," said Carolyn Carlson, who has been affiliated with the club for 15 years and proposed the concept for the newly dubbed “Taste of Kiwanis.” Taste of Kiwanis will allow participants to sample food from eight Arlington-area restaurants: the Hilton Arlington in Ballston, El Ranchero Bar & Grill, Kabob House, Extra Virgin in Shirlington, Chick-fil-A in Ballston, Noodles & Company in Ballston, Shoreline Seafood, and Pupatella. …

The Gay and Lesbian Alliance Against Defamation organization staged 'kiss in' demonstrations at Chick-fil-A locations across the country on Friday.
Though gay rights supporters staged "kiss in" demonstrations at Chick-fil-A restaurants across the country Friday, no evidence of the protest was found at the fast food chain restaurant inside Ballston Common Mall. In fact, it seemed like business as usual. Businessmen in suits chomped on chicken sandwiches. Children picked at chicken nuggets. Shoppers stopped for a quick snack. One Chick-fil-A employee passed out a tray of free samples. "I just don't mix my politics and my fast food," said Arlington resident Neal Collins, who ordered the restaurant's signature chicken sandwich. On Friday the 13th, it may not be black cats, but cows that will be spotted around Arlington. As part of Cow Appreciation Day on July 13, Chick-fil-A will give away free meals at their many locations in the Washington metro region, including the restaurant located inside Ballston Common Mall. Customers who come to the restaurant dressed “head-to-hoof" in a cow costume will receive a free meal. Any guests who wear "at least a few spots" will be eligible for a free entree. The promotion will be ongoing throughout the day and customers can claim their free meal or entree during breakfast, lunch or dinner.
