The Saturday Sauté

Chocolate Cupcakes with Ganache and Butter Frosting

Homemade cupcakes with 2 types of icing and topping ideas. Perfect dessert to make with the kids while they're home from school on winter break.

Merry Christmas Ballston and Virginia Square! I'm dreaming of a White Christmas this year-and rumor has it that might actually happen. I'm hoping for it-but I guess by the time this posts, we'll know :). I changed my mind a couple times as far as what to make this week. It's dessert week. It's Christmas. It's Chocolate month. Kids are home for over a week-family could be in town. Nothing is open on Christmas day except 7-11 and movie theaters...This week has a lot of pressure! I want to come up with something fun, something kid friendly, something interactive that brings other people into the cooking process, and something delicious. Cupcakes are hot right now. We're going to make cupcakes, icing, and ganache from scratch. I'm thinking it'…

The Saturday Sauté

Chocolate Chorizo Tapas

These sweet and savory appetizers will be a big hit!

I hope you all are staying warm during these freezing temperatures! I know the rational and natural thing to do during this season is to stay indoors with a nice, warm blanket, but there are some amazing things going on around the city if you're willing to brave the cold! Last night we went to a Live Nativity featuring singing, Christmas lights, and hot cider at Top Golf Alexandria. It was a blast (but it was COLD!). If you're interested-the same event will be held at Lincoln Park on Capitol Hill today from 4:00pm-7:00pm. Tonight, I believe I'm going to try to drag my husband to Zoo Lights at the National Zoo. Feel free to grab your coat, hat, and mittens and head on out, too! It's cold, but it'll be beautiful. For something a little …

The Holiday Sauté

Chocolate Mint Cookies

These are by far, the most amazing cookies I've ever made. If you could make only one cookie this holiday season-make it this one!

So...I know I shouldn't be surprised. And I know it shouldn't be a shock...but what was with this temperature drop this week?!?! One morning it's pouring rain and smells like spring, and then I leave my office that afternoon to seemingly freezing temperatures. I supposed it is December, which means it should be cold out...but come on! A little consistency would be nice. At least December does mean it's COOKIE SEASON :)! As we begin to wrap up cookie week on the Holiday Saute, I have to share some exciting news. We now have a new FAVORITE cookie. I didn't think it was possible, but it is. These Chocolate Mint Cookies that I found the other day on www.allrecipes.com blew us away! These are so delicious. If you make one type of cookie this …

The Saturday Sauté

Roasted Beet Salad with Cocoa Vinaigrette

This unique and delicious salad will be a huge hit! The roasted beets and dressing work well together and make this salad a must try!

Welcome to the weekend, Ballston! This week seemed to drag on and on. Also, welcome to winter. I was told in parts of Arlington and Alexandria it actually snowed last night. I didn't see it-so I can't confirm if this was real or if people were just trying to scare me...but I believe the rumor to be true. It's that time of year. I-C-K. But, what is exciting is that December also marks the beginning of a new month, which means a new ingredient for the Saturday Saute! Every month, we pick one ingredient to feature in every recipe. In September, it was apples. October was pumpkins. We just wrapped up a month of pecans in November. Now, we have a month of chocolate. This means a salad or soup, appetizer, main dish, and dessert-all with …

Rum Balls

These rum balls turned out REALLY WELL!!! Give them a shot, they'll be a big hit!

Happy Hanukkah, Ballston!!! And Happy Cookie Week!!! This has been a great time in our apartment: nothing is better than having your place consistently smell like cookies!! It hasn't been the best week on our waistlines, but still: can't complain too much. I finally came up with a rum ball recipe that I like. FINALLY. I love rum. I love cookies. I love rum cake. But I've never liked rum balls. They always seemed to be too potent, too messy, or not enough chocolate for me. However,  I think I've come up with a great, slightly unique recipe that you will fall in love with. Dieters beware: This is not a cookie for calorie counters. If you're looking for something you won't want to punish yourself for later, try the Pumpkin Cranberry Bars from…

I have been wanting to try run balls, but have never actually had them so I had no idea what receipe would work! These will be worth a try. I had to buy dark rum for some caramel shortbread bars (yes, they are as heavenly as they sound) a couple of weeks ago so I might as well find something to do with it, right?   more ›

The Holiday Sauté

Peanut Butter Cup Cookies

This delicious cookie will be a huge hit! Use some of that leftover Halloween candy and try this out!

Welcome to The Holiday Sauté!  This column will feature recipes for this Holiday season! Here, we'll feature many different types of Holiday treats: cookies, appetizers, side dishes, cocktails, and even some entertaining tips. I'll be updating this column multiple times a week-in addition to keeping up with the weekly Saturday Sauté. Happy week after Halloween! This is the time to sort through your kids' trick-or-treat bags and sneak some of the good stuff, or head to the store for half-priced candy! Halloween so frequently gets overpowered by turkey, candy canes and Christmas trees that I feel it necessary to feature one recipe that still somewhat relates to this fun, candy filled day. To kick off The Holiday Sauté, we're going to give …

HAHA! I'd give them an "A" without the candy-I thought they tasted better without the peanut butter cups. The cookies themselves are great! But with them-still AWESOME! just not an A! But I'll consult with you from now on first. Ballston-let me know what you think!!! Maybe I was just on candy-overload :)   more ›

W&L Students are Bananas: B-A-N-A-N-A-S

W&L IB Students sell chocolate-covered bananas to raise money for a Costa Rican school in need

Drive past Washington and Lee High School as the students are being released and you are sure to notice that anywhere between 75 and 100 of them are devouring chocolate-covered bananas. "It's quite funny to see," laughed Chad DeMagistris, coordinator of the IB program that is behind the banana sale. "It's a unique item to sell, but they have been extremely popular." The IB (International Baccalaureate) students are involved in an exchange program with an IB private school in Costa Rica. Several of the students went there to visit earlier this year, and students from both schools went to visit a one-room schoolhouse in the small town of Tirimbina, Costa Rica. "It basically looked like the exact opposite of the private school that we partner…
