Arlington police will modify security plans for future events as necessary, according to spokesman.
Arlington police are reaching out to certain event organizers and will modify their security plans in the future as necessary in the wake of the explosions at the Boston Marathon this week that killed at least three and injured up to 125 more. Local events, like the Crystal City 5K Fridays, rely on the Arlington County Police Department for security. "Whatever plan they choose to recommend, we will follow," Angela Fox, chief executive of the Crystal City Business Improvement District, told Patch late Monday. The Crystal City runs will continue through April as planned, she said. "Obviously, at this point I think the races will take on a more intense meaning — sort of getting the courage to keep on, keeping on," she said. "I'm sure …

The exhibit benefits the Animal Welfare League of Arlington and Gallery Underground.
Take a "Walk on the Wild Side" starting this week in an art exhibit at Crystal City’s Art Undergound. “For this juried show, artists are encouraged to explore the creative influence of the furred, feathered and finned creatures of our world,” according to a description of the show from the Crystal City Business Improvement District. The exhibit benefits two nonprofits, Gallery Underground and the Arlington Animal Welfare League. Crystal City’s Gallery Underground is organized by the Arlington Artists Alliance, which promotes the arts in the county. The Arlington Animal Welfare League is a shelter for stray or neglected animals. An opening reception will be hosted for the exhibit from 5 to 8 p.m. on Friday at the gallery, at 2100 Crystal …

New underground initiative kicks off with an open house from 6 to 10 p.m. Saturday.
Crystal City is taking an artful approach to liven up its underground shopping district: Art Underground launches this weekend. The Crystal City Business Improvement District, or BID, is working with area businesses to improve the image of the underground Crystal City Shops and to bring more exposure to its mazes of shopping, dining and art. “We sort-of know what it looks like now, but in two years it could be so much bigger,” said Angela Fox, the BID's chief executive. “We’re excited to see how it morphs and grows.” Art Underground kicks off from 6 to 10 p.m. Saturday with an open house that will allow visitors and guests to tour the Gallery Underground, view photography taken from all over the world, and participate in an ArtJamz mega-…

Restaurants in Crystal City already feeling the effects of looming budget cuts.
Crystal City restaurant owners are already starting to feel the squeeze that comes with sequestration in the form of dwindling lunch crowds. “Absolutely, I’m concerned,” said Jim Madden, owner of the Crystal City Sports Pub, which has been in business since 1994. “Quite a bit has happened here already with the Navy Yard moving and BRAC. We would be additionally concerned with any kind of cutbacks that would come here.” The Crystal City area has traditionally hosted many government offices and related businesses, so when the government cuts back, local businesses feel it. Madden said that sequestration — automatic, across-the-board federal spending cuts agreed to by Congress to force the passage of a budget — is another blow to his business…

Through Saturday: Free makeup, hair makeovers; runway shows every 15 minutes from 6 to 10 p.m. nightly.
Crystal City will sparkle a bit more this week. Now in its fifth year, Crystal Couture kicked off Tuesday night. More than 40 Washington-area designers and boutiques will be there on any given night through Saturday. Organizers expect about 4,000 people to visit the 12th floor of 251 18th St. for the high-end fashion show and sale. Put on by the Crystal City Business Improvement District, or BID, this year's event showcases 26,000-square-feet of vacant office space that's been transformed with a 400-foot runway that wraps around the room, a bar, a photo booth, various booths for the boutiques and free makeup and hair makeovers in the center of the room. "It's phenomenal," said Angela Fox, the BID's chief executive. "The runway turned out …

Free makeovers, near-nonstop runway shows and more than 40 booths take over a new space in Crystal City.
For five nights this week, Crystal Couture will take over the 12th floor of a Crystal City office building — bringing dozens of boutiques and a wraparound runway that will go almost nonstop from 6 to 10 p.m. Tuesday through Saturday. "A lot of people are intimidated by going to fashion shows. But this is a really fun, laid-back means at which you can get out there and shop and hang out with your friends," said Angela Fox, chief executive of the Crystal City Business Improvement District, or BID. "You don't need to come dressed to the nines. It's very open and accommodating." That's two key qualities of the what the BID bills as the Washington region's "hottest fashion show and high-end trunk sale." Now in its fifth year, Crystal Couture …

Crystal City BID reports Whole Foods Market is coming but offers few details.
10:46 a.m. update — Arlington County officials have confirmed that a new Whole Foods is in the works. The store would be located on the ground level of the Metropolitan Park community at 1200 Eads St. in Pentagon City, across from the Costco. “The developer has proposed a new site plan for a site within the Metropolitan Park that would contain a Whole Foods,” said Aaron Shriber, of Arlington County’s Planning Division. The site plan proposed by developer Vornado/Charles E. Smith went before the Arlington County Planning Commission’s Site Plan Review Committee on Tuesday evening. The plans are in the beginning stages, and would not come before the county board until sometime next year, Shriber said. Phases four and five of Metropolitan …

The Crystal City Diamond Derby is returning for a fall edition. You've never seen anything like it.
Want to see something you’ve never seen before? Head down to Crystal City on Saturday, Sept. 29, for the second running of the Crystal City Diamond Derby. One part art, one part bikes, and two parts spectacle, it’s a crazy mash of people who come together for a great evening in a unusual setting. You want to see this. I should admit that earlier this year, when I encouraged people to check out the first Crystal City Diamond Derby, I didn’t really understand what the event was. I recommended it mostly on the strength of my experience with the promoters as people who put on fun and interesting events. And then I went to check it out for myself. My time there included lots of gawking at decorated bikes, racing on my own bike through a …

Given the ubiquitous police presence at this event, has anyone considered the perpetrator could be a deranged born-in-the-USA "first responder"?   more ›
