BikeArlington program manager to answer questions about sharing the road and more in an online chat Wednesday.
Chris Eatough, a BikeArlington program manager, will answer questions about sharing Arlington's streets and bike, pedestrian and driver safety during an online chat at noon Wednesday. The monthly chat is part of the Arlington County Department of Environmental Services' Ask the Expert series. This month's topic is street safety. Past events have focused on recycling, streets and snow, and other areas. The department launched the series in November in hopes of better engaging members of the community. Arlington crews will begin working 12-hour shifts at midnight; VDOT expects to deploy 4,000 trucks in Northern Virginia by 4 a.m. Wednesday.
With Arlington in line to see its heaviest snowfall of the season, the county's Department of Environmental Services is spending Tuesday preparing for full mobilization. The storm system is expected to dump 5 inches or more on Arlington starting late tonight. The Weather Channel has named this Winter Storm Saturn. The National Weather Service does not name snow storms. Locally, the name "snowquester" has caught on. Outlying areas of the Washington metro area could see as much as double the snowfall. Arlington County will operate 46 of its trucks and will secure six or more contract trucks as needed, spokeswoman Shannon Whalen McDaniel said in an email. Live chat to become a monthly event.
Got a question about going green? Go online. The Arlington County Department of Environmental Services is launching a new monthly chat this week in advance of America Recycles Day, which is Thursday. Ask the Experts, as it is called, begins at noon Thursday. Have something that you're not sure can be recycled? Just ask. The county's recycling and waste reduction program manager, Linda Brown, will answer questions about residential recycling during the hour-long live chat. Questions also can be submitted in advance via Facebook or email. The chat will take place using the Cover It Live program on Facebook. Vaccum leaf collection starts Monday in Arlington County, and officials are asking that residents take a few steps before then. The leaf collection process is done in phases for respective neighborhoods starting Monday through Dec. 31. Find out when leaf collectors are coming to your neighborhood. The county asks that residents do the following in preperation for this: Arlington County's Department of Environmental Services collect about 50,000 cubic yards of leaves every year around this time in a complex leaf collection program. Staff form the leaf collection schedule by analyzing "historic data, tree types and density, weather forecasts, state forestry forecasts, and resident feedback," according to the department's website. The twice-a-year E-CARE was this weekend at Thomas Jefferson Middle School.
The biannual Arlington Environmental Collection and Recycling Event, or E-CARE, returned to Thomas Jefferson Middle School this weekend, drawing an estimated 1,239 to the event, according to Arlington County Department of Environmental Services spokeswoman Shannon Whalen McDaniel. E-CARE allows county residents to dispose of hazardous materials like paint, solvents, garden chemicals and items containing mercury, and to recycle electronics, bikes, small metal items, shoes, eyeglasses and certain medical equipment. The county collected an estimated 11.5 tons of electronics, more than filling one tractor trailer — a bit more than half of what was collected at the same event in April.
