The Arlington is one of three vessels to be named in honor of the victims and first responders on 9/11.

The USS Arlington, one of three Navy vessels to be named in honor of the victims and first responders on 9/11, recently arrived at its new home port of Naval Station Norfolk. It will be formally commissioned on April 6. Several Arlington County officials were present for the ship's arrival on Friday. "I got to spend the day with a number of first responders from Arlington and the region. The ship arrived with a beautiful large American flag billowing in the wind," Arlington County Board member Libby Garvey said in a recent email to campaign supporters. "When it docked for the first time, all the shore vehicles sounded their sirens in greeting. I suddenly remembered all the sirens on 9/11 when they signaled a terrible emergency. But on …

Washington-Lee Junior Designs Winning Arlington County Car Decal

The soon-to-be commissioned USS Arlington was the theme for this year's contest.

The 2013-14 Arlington County vehicle decal will feature a depiction of the USS Arlington with an American flag superimposed over it. Ben Jenks, a Washington-Lee High School junior who designed the graphic, was announced as the winner of the county's annual decal competition Tuesday before the Arlington County Board. Arlington County Treasurer Frank O'Leary, who is on the USS Arlington Commissioning Committee, chose the ship as the theme for this year's design. The vessel is in line to be commissioned in Norfolk in April. "This decal will be a fine inspiration to the sailors and Marines that will be on board our ship, the USS Arlington," O’Leary said in a statement. "It will also be a fitting tribute to those who died and those who served …

USS Arlington: Fundraising Under Way for Commissioning

Group hopes to raise $450,000 for the U.S. Navy vessel, the third named after Arlington County.

In the second-floor atrium at 2100 Clarendon Blvd., just outside the County Treasurer's Office, the occasional image of an intimidating U.S. Navy vessel appears with the words, "25,000 Tons of Peacekeeping Named Arlington." The USS Arlington — the third ship to be named for this county — is undergoing its sea trials and is slated to be officially commissioned in April in Norfolk. Meanwhile, fundraising efforts are under way to make that commissioning a success. County Treasurer Frank O'Leary, who is on the commissioning committee, said the goal is to raise $450,000. "It's a daunting task," he said. "We really want to get the entire Arlington community behind it." The USS Arlington is the eighth San Antonio class of landing platform docks, …

Bondi Hires Tax Advisor, Issues Statement

Arlington County Board candidate says she is being attacked.

Melissa Bondi, a Democratic candidate for the vacant seat on the Arlington County Board, has issued a statement regarding tax problems that have surfaced this week. Bondi, 40, owes the IRS more than $19,000, according to a federal tax lien on file with the Arlington County Clerk of the Circuit Court's Office. She has stated she believes the lien is the result of a misunderstanding or error. Bondi, too, hasn't registered or paid county taxes on a vehicle since February 2006, though she has said she didn't give up her car until 2008. In her statement, Bondi said that in that timeframe, her father let her borrow his car as he was near death so she could visit to see him through radiation, chemotherpy and surgery. Bondi states "blog …

Tax Problems Dog Arlington Board Candidate

Bondi owes more than $19,000 to IRS, documents show.

A Democratic candidate for the Arlington County Board owes more than $19,000 in back federal taxes and also had trouble paying local taxes in 2004 and 2005, according to documents obtained by Patch. Melissa Bondi, 40, owes the IRS about $1,821 for 2005 and another $17,430 for 2006 – in all, about $19,252, according to a federal tax lien on file with the Arlington County Clerk of the Circuit Court's Office. Bondi believes the lien is the result of a misunderstanding or error. Once the matter is settled, the IRS will file a release with the local clerk's office. An IRS spokesman said he could not comment on specific taxpayer information due to federal disclosure laws. The tax lien was signed March 29, 2011; it was recorded in the local clerk…

You can see all the candidates' financial reports here: http://www.vpap.org/offices/profile/162?election_id=6530 As for yard signs, they're cheap compared to mailings. As someone who has worked on several campaigns, I know that you can blanket Arlington county in signs for about $2,000 - $3,000 but that it costs $6,000 - $8,000 for one mailing to targeted voters.   more ›
