New Principal Brings 'Passion for Education' to Gunston Middle

Former Spanish teacher Lori Wiggins one of five new principals in Arlington Public Schools

Lori Wiggins spent the last 19 years building a career in education that led her to become the new principal at Gunston Middle School. And she spent the latter half of summer getting ready for Tuesday — the first day of the 2012-13 school year for students coming back from summer break. Wiggins made flashcards to help her memorize the school's faculty; she pored over the school's 2011-12 yearbooks to help familiarize herself with the current batch of seventh- and eighth-graders. An ice cream social last week helped her reinforce those students' names and commit some of the school's sixth-graders to memory — she makes a point of looking the student in eye, shaking their hand and repeating their name out loud. Alexandria Man, 30, Charged with Bringing a Gun on School Property

Police: Man was located at a nighttime soccer game.

A 30-year-old man was arrested this weekend and charged with brandishing a firearm on school property following a dispute over how closely two cars were parked, according to the Arlington County Police Department. Mohamed Sesay, 30, was released from Arlington County jail Tuesday on a $1,500 secured bond. Two men were talking in a parking lot near Gunston Middle School shortly before 9:40 p.m. Saturday when Sesay approached to get in his vehicle, according to police. He told one of the men that their car was parked too close to his, police spokesman Dustin Sternbeck said. "The went back and forth. Words were exchanged. They had a verbal spat about being parked too close together," Sternbeck said. Sesay then went to the passenger side of …

Outnumbering the Bully in Arlington Schools

Wakefield and Washington-Lee high schools implement creative anti-bullying programs to fight teen harassment.

Muktaru Jalloh, a senior at Wakefield High School, distinctively remembers an incident in 10th grade that changed his life and made him the person he is today. He was playing basketball with a few classmates during open gym. He blocked the shot of a ninth-grader who was much smaller than him. The ninth-grader turned around and out of nowhere punched Jalloh right in the face. Jalloh had two choices: Punch the kid back and not look like a coward in front of his friends, or simply walk away. In that short moment, he thought about his future and decided not to react to the present. With that maturity, Jalloh was able to walk away from the situation and avoid months or years of possible punishment from the school and his parents. He is now …

Building Better Learners by Teaching Across Cultures

Schools like Gunston Middle and Wakefield High provide intensive Spanish programs for Arlington County students.

One of Arlington Public Schools' stated values is to have its students be “proficient in at least two languages upon graduation and have access to world language proficiency programs regardless of school of attendance.” Schools like Gunston Middle and Wakefield High are doing just that. Gunston Middle School students receive more than 11 hours of instruction in Spanish weekly. Half of their day consists of learning science and social studies in Spanish, and the other half learning math and language arts in English. Like Key Elementary, Gunston follows a two-way immersion approach to education, integrating native English speakers and native Spanish speakers in classes that teach different subjects in both languages. Through two-way …
