Patriots face Warriors, Generals host Jags
It has been an up and coming season for all three Arlington high schools in a wide open National District. After starting 6-0 in conference play, the Patriots lost four of their final eight games to slide to third place. However, the Patriots are coming off one of their best performances of the year, a narrow 57-54 loss to the top seed Edison Eagles, nearly avenging the 28-point loss at home earlier in the year. They will now gear up to take on the cross-town rival Wakefield Warriors, who have lost six of their last eight games, but are coming off a great win over Washington-Lee. The Warriors have been inconsistent this year, but have earned some big wins, including a buzzer-beater victory over Edison, and a pair of overtime wins …

Patriot score 91, Lady Patriots win in Overtime
It was a night to remember for the Yorktown community, as the boys and girls basketball teams, dance team and cheerleaders were all honoring their beloved seniors. The parents received roses before the game, and the boisterous student section was on hand with signs and body paint. Following the Lady Patriots 46-39 overtime victory, and riding the emotion of the evening, the Patriots put up their best game of the year, crushing the Hayfield Hawks 91-50. “We came out with the mindset that this is a big game, and the last home game for us as seniors,” Kyle Bailey said. “And that we needed to put on a show.” From the opening tip off, the Patriots dominated all phases of the game. Defensively, they completely disrupted the Hawks attack, …

Andrew Karpinski hits game winning three-pointer with time winding down
The Washington-Lee Generals earned a vital win on the road Wednesday, defeating the Hayfield Hawks 50-47. The Generals really struggled offensively to start and finish the game, but a solid stretch of play on both sides of the halftime break and a solid defensive effort throughout allowed them to eek out the nail biter. Andrew Karpinski, Antoine Ingram and Ian Cole all finished with 10 points, while Jack Beckman and Jonah Sens added eight points each to the balanced General attack. When Washington-Lee hosted Hayfield in late December, they dominated the game winning 60-35. However on this night, it appeared that the Generals had underestimated the feisty Hawks, who have played spoiler in recent weeks, pulling off three upsets since …

Yorktown girls complete season sweep over Arlington rivals
The Yorktown Lady Patriots kept up theire winning ways in the National District with a 55-35 win over Washington-Lee Tuesday. Freshman Hayley Molnar led the way with a season-high 15 points, including 11 in the final quarter. Senior Brooke Huffman also had a season high with 13 points, and Tricia Leano added nine. Emma Cooper led the Generals with 12 points, and Brianna Hogan scored 11 in defeat. When these two teams met at Yorktown in December, the Patriots were able to narrowly escape with the three-point victory, and that was with senior leader Lena Negri, who missed last night’s game with an injury. If the first half of the rematch, it looked as if late game heroics may be in order again, as the lead went back forth and neither …

Ian Cole scores game winner with 3.2 seconds left
Exactly one week after winning a nail biter over the Wakefield Warriors, the Washington-Lee Generals pulled off another dramatic win, this time defeating arch rival Yorktown 60-57. Senior Andrew Karpinksy led the Generals with 16 points, while Jack Beckman and Jonah Sens added 12 and 10, respectively. Although he only finished with three points, Ian Cole had what proved to be the play of the game with a steal and layup in the final seconds. Jack Early had a game-high 20 points in defeat. The atmosphere of the packed Washington-Lee gym was fully charged, as the respective student sections of each team filled the stands on opposing baselines, screaming cheers back and forth at each other. The players responded with great intensity …

Tough week for the Warriors. Generals and Patriots go 1-1
Wakefield Warriors (6-10, 3-5) The Wakefield Warriors entered the week at 3-3 in the National District, preparing to play both of their Arlington Rivals. Tuesday, they hosted Washington-Lee in the game to determine fourth place at the midway point of the district schedule. Although the riveting game went back and forth, the Warriors fell 72-69. Friday, they traveled to Yorktown, where redemption would not be easy to find. A six-point first quarter put the Warriors in a hole early, and they were never able to climb back into contention, falling 62-46. They will look to get back on track with an easier game at Stuart, before hosting Mount Vernon in a vital game for playoff positioning. Washington-Lee Generals (6-9, 4-4) The Generals …

Long scoring droughts lead to lopsided loss
All good things come to an end, as the Yorktown Patriots learned last night, losing 56-28 to the Edison Eagles. The loss marked the end to a 10-game winning streak that began on Dec. 14. Against Edison, the Patriots just never got going on offense, and the size and quickness of the Eagles proved to be too much to handle defensively. Kevin Bailey led the Patriots with nine points in defeat, and Daniel Pietropaoli added seven. The Patriots came out slow, falling in a quick 7-0 hole, failing to score a single point in the first four minutes of the game. A pair of baskets by both Bailey and Pietropaoli helped Yorktown close the quarter on a 9-4 run to pull within 2 points after the opening period. However, the tenacious 3-2 zone of the …

Washington-Lee Generals beat Wakefield Warriors by three, freshman Jonah Sens scores 27.
In front of a split raucous crowd at Wakefield High School, the Washington-Lee Generals were able to pull out an important district win, 72-69, over their cross- town rivals. Washington-Lee freshman center Jonah Sens showed up in a major way, scoring 27 points, including 18 in the second half. Jack Beckman had another strong 14-point performance and Ian Cole provided a 12-point spark off the bench and made key plays down the stretch. Thomas Taylor led the Warriors with 14, and Aaron Fort added 12. The intensity was high at the outset, as both teams were fueled by the rivalry and charged by the crowd. Both teams dropped into zone defense early to throw off their opponent, and each team came away with a pair of baskets. But the pace of …

Warriors and Generals Prepare for Battle
Before the season began, Wakefield head coach Tony Bentley said his main goal was to finish in the top four in the district, earn a home playoff game, then draw a regional opponent, “where anything can happen.” Tuesday night’s clash of Arlington rivals, Wakefield and Washington-Lee, will mark the halfway point of district competition. Both teams are coming off important two-point victories against Edison and Falls Church, respectively. Both teams also enter at 3-3 in the National District, tied for fourth place in the standings. But for Bentley, this matchup is not just an important rivalry game but also a conflict of interest, as he squares off against his alma mater, led by mentor and good friend Bobby Dobson, whom he assisted at …
