Engle lists party affiliation as independent in campaign to unseat Democratic Del. Rob Krupicka.
Alexandria resident Jeffrey Engle has launched a campaign to run for the state's 45th House District. The seat represents part of Alexandria, along with parts of Arlington and Fairfax counties in the Virginia General Assembly. The seat is currently held by Del. Rob Krupicka, one of four Democrats who represent Arlington in the House of Delegates. In a statement of organization filed with the State Board of Elections, Engle lists an address in Alexandria as his residence and his political party as independent. Independent candidates wishing to run in the general election are required to submit their nomination petitions by June 11. Nomination petitions must contain the signatures of at least 125 qualified voters in the legislative district…

Bill would impose harsher penalties, make texting while driving a primary offense.
A bill that would impose tougher penalties on those convicted of texting while driving cleared the state Senate on Tuesday and now heads to the desk of Gov. Bob McDonnell. The bill increases the fine to $250 — up from $20 — for the first texting-while-driving offense and $500 for each subsequent conviction. It also makes texting while driving an aggravating circumstance to reckless driving, and so anyone convicted of such would face a mandatory minimum $500 penalty if they were texting while they were driving recklessly. Texting while driving would also become a primary offense, which means police can stop someone on the suspicion that a driver is texting; current law allows police to charge someone with texting while driving only if they'…

Arlington delegates support bill, which would elevate penalty for texting while driving to include possible jail time and up to $2,500 fine.
A bill introduced in the Virginia General Assembly would make texting while driving a more serious offense — and the penalties upon conviction would be up to one year in jail and up to a $2,500 fine. It's not the first time such a measure has been proposed. But advocates say a recent court ruling that differentiates texting while driving from reckless driving should give them the support they need to get the bill through the General Assembly this year. "There's usually about 10 texting bills a year, and they usually all get killed," said state Del. Scott Surovell, D-Mount Vernon. "This year, something's going to change." The House bill, which all four Arlington delegates have signed on to support, would essentially elevate texting while …

Former Alexandria City Councilman Rob Krupicka says education will be an area of focus for him in Richmond.
Rob Krupicka is officially a state delegate. The former Alexandria City Council member was sworn in Friday morning in Richmond as the representative to the 45th District in the House of Delegates. Krupicka’s wife Lisa, their two daughters and several friends joined Krupicka as he took the oath of office. “I’m honored to be entrusted with representing the interests of the residents of the 45th District,” Krupicka said in a press release. The Democrat defeated Republican Tim McGhee and Libertarian Justin Malkin by a wide margin in a special election held Sept. 4. The seat became vacant when David Englin resigned effective Aug. 31. Krupicka plans on spending the next three months developing his legislative agenda by reaching out to …

Libertarian Justin Malkin is one of three candidates on the ballot in Tuesday's 45th District special election.
Justin Malkin’s platform for the 45th District seat in the House of Delegates is a simple one, one that he even says is a little corny. “I honestly believe in my message and that it will resound with voters, and that’s social tolerance and fiscal responsibility,” he said. The Libertarian candidate is on Tuesday’s special election ballot, where he will face Democrat Rob Krupicka and Republican Tim McGhee. How does his Libertarian Party philosophy mesh with a constituency that largely depends on the government for jobs and livelihood? Malkin says it’s an uphill battle, but he also believes the 45th District is not an outright void when it comes to libertarian thinking. “I think there are a lot people out there who will take a government job …

Ebbin defeated Krupicka in state senate primary last year.
Rob Krupicka picked up the endorsement of State Sen. Adam Ebbin (D-30th) on Wednesday in the race to replace David Englin as state delegate from the 45th District. Krupicka, an Alexandria City councilman and a member of the State Board of Education, lost to Ebbin in a Democratic primary for state senate one year ago this month. “[Rob] has been a steadfast ally in the fight for true equality, a world-class education system, a cleaner environment, smart transportation solutions, and innovative policies that keep our economy strong,” Ebbin wrote in an email to supporters on Wednesday morning. The announcement came on the eve of a last-minute caucus to determine the Democratic nominee. Krupicka is running against fellow Alexandria resident …

Del. David Englin tells Gov. Bob McDonnell he hopes a special election will be held on Nov. 6.
Del. David Englin (D-45th) announced Thursday that he has submitted his resignation from the House of Delegates effective Aug. 31 and endorsed Karen Gautney to replace him. In April, Englin announced he would not seek re-election to focus on rebuilding his marriage and family. He admitted to being unfaithful to his wife. In his resignation notice to Gov. Bob McDonnell, Englin said he hoped a special election for his seat would be held during the Nov. 6 General Election “to ensure the best possible stewardship of taxpayer resources.” Englin endorsed Gautney, writing: "The people of the 45th District deserve a Delegate who is totally devoted to fighting for what's right and not distracted by future political ambitions. … Karen's diplomacy, …

Arlington School Board member is one of two Democrats to announce they will seek Del. David Englin's seat.
James Lander believes he can go to Richmond and build bridges that will help Democrats in the House of Delegates advance their agenda and move this state forward. Lander, 42, has served in the U.S. Navy actively or as a reservist for 22 years. He's about halfway through his first two-year term on the Arlington School Board, his first public office. And he's a national program manager for Goodwill Industries International, doing workforce development for veterans who are transitioning back to civilian life. Lander is one of two Democrats who have announced their intentions to seek the seat in the House of Delegates that will be vacated by Del. David Englin, D-Alexandria. The other is Alexandria City Councilman Rob Krupicka. Last week, …

Oh darling, you again? Only one person trails me around the Net leaving remarks of that nature. I can't think why you aren't tired of it. Do make it easier on yourself and stick to one name. "CSG" sounds like a compressed-gas limited partnership. I suppose Barry and Larry and Barbara and Doug Park and Pike Rider, etc., are all investors.   more ›
