Arlington School Board member James Lander was endorsed by local Democrats to keep his seat this weekend by 47 votes. The final tally, released Saturday night following a two-day caucus, showed Lander with 1,144 votes to 1,097 for economist Barbara Kanninen. “This campaign has been a tremendous opportunity to re-connect with Arlington voters," Lander said in a statement. "I appreciate Barbara Kanninen’s spirited and well run campaign, and I thank her for her work to engage the voters of Arlington on the important issues facing our schools. I am humbled to have another opportunity to be the Democratic endorsee for the School Board, and I hope to continue my service to the students and families of Arlington.” So far, Lander is the only …

Krupicka Officially Announces Candidacy for Englin's Seat

Alexandria City Councilman Rob Krupicka says education is his top priority and promises to fight against "right-wing extremism."

Alexandria City Councilman Rob Krupicka officially announced his candidacy for the Democratic nomination for the 45th District House of Delegates seat on Tuesday. Krupicka said in statement that his top priority is education and that he will also work toward environmental and transportation solutions that create jobs and conserve natural resources. "As a graduate of the University of Virginia, and someone who has worked to increase the number of students ready to succeed in college, I will work to make sure our public higher education system is transparent, affordable and accessible for every resident of the Commonwealth,” said Krupicka, who is also a member of the State Board of Education. Amen. I am so tired of reading all these snipes at ACPS and public schools in general. If you don't like what you hear about your city's schools, I encourage any one who has time to go on these blogs to channel that time into volunteering time and talents and doing what you can do to contribute towards making your school system a better place. The teachers can't do it alone, and don't deserve all…   more ›

Updated: Englin Turns in Resignation, Endorses Gautney

Del. David Englin tells Gov. Bob McDonnell he hopes a special election will be held on Nov. 6.

Del. David Englin (D-45th) announced Thursday that he has submitted his resignation from the House of Delegates effective Aug. 31 and endorsed Karen Gautney to replace him. In April, Englin announced he would not seek re-election to focus on rebuilding his marriage and family. He admitted to being unfaithful to his wife. In his resignation notice to Gov. Bob McDonnell, Englin said he hoped a special election for his seat would be held during the Nov. 6 General Election “to ensure the best possible stewardship of taxpayer resources.” Englin endorsed Gautney, writing: "The people of the 45th District deserve a Delegate who is totally devoted to fighting for what's right and not distracted by future political ambitions. … Karen's diplomacy, …

Hank, you're right. Marian Van Landingham was a hard woman to replace, and as much as David Englin tried, he could never truly succeed her in stature. Marian is truly an Alexandrian institution, a woman whose likes we'll probably not see in local politics for quite some time.   more ›

Lander Wants to Seek Common Ground as Delegate

Arlington School Board member is one of two Democrats to announce they will seek Del. David Englin's seat.

James Lander believes he can go to Richmond and build bridges that will help Democrats in the House of Delegates advance their agenda and move this state forward. Lander, 42, has served in the U.S. Navy actively or as a reservist for 22 years. He's about halfway through his first two-year term on the Arlington School Board, his first public office. And he's a national program manager for Goodwill Industries International, doing workforce development for veterans who are transitioning back to civilian life. Lander is one of two Democrats who have announced their intentions to seek the seat in the House of Delegates that will be vacated by Del. David Englin, D-Alexandria. The other is Alexandria City Councilman Rob Krupicka. Last week, …
