Getting money is like dating, Jonathan Aberman told a room full of young entrepreneurs Tuesday night: It's the questions that aren't asked that can make or break the relationship. Investors are motivated by fear and greed, he said. The fear is that they're making a bad decision by investing in your big idea. The entrepreneur, then, has to establish his or her character in a way that makes the investor want to get greedy. The music blasting Friday inside the Glebe Road offices of Arlington Economic Development set the tone for a high-energy, two-hour event that gave 20 area entrepreneurs a chance to pitch their ideas to some of the top names in the greater Washington startup scene. Twenty businesses will have a chance to give a 1-minute pitch for cash, space and mentoring.
Startup Virginia will give 20 entrepreneurs an opportunity to make a 1-minute pitch later this month for a chance to bolster their business and to win a cash donation to the charity of their choice. It's part of a weeklong series of events at entrepreneurial "hot spots" across Virginia, said Jennifer Ives, director of business investment at Arlington Economic Development. Events will be held in Blacksburg, Charlottesville, Richmond, Hampton Roads and Northern Virginia.
