Arlington celebrated Fat Tuesday in what's become an annual tradition in Clarendon. Thousands came out for Clarendon's annual Mardi Gras Parade. Matt Hussmann — executive director of the Clarendon Alliance, which puts on the event — said he thought the crowd was as good or better than last year's estimate of 3,000. At times, the crowd drifted so far into the street near Wilson and Edgewood that the parade had to squeeze through. Participants said they gave out more beads this year than last. "Well, I thought it was fun," Hussmann told Patch. "I thought the crowd was great. I thought the groups were great. There was a lot of energy. The weather was nice. So, we're happy. Brother and sister David and Rebecca Tax started the parade 15 years ago before moving to Falls Church.
Siblings and former Clarendon business owners Rebecca and David Tax know how to have a good time — and 15 years ago, they stepped out on a limb and started something that still draws quite a crowd in Clarendon. The 15th Annual Clarendon-Courthouse Mardi Gras Parade has grown substantially from the 10 floats it had in its inaugural year and has become a big deal for the entire region. This year’s parade is expected to be the biggest yet. “We were trying to promote the restaurants in the area and we thought it would be fun,” David Tax said recently inside the Falls Church restaurant he runs with his sister, Clare and Don’s Beach Shack. Organizers estimate 10,000 people attended 14th annual event.
An estimated 10,000 people descended on the heart of Arlington on Saturday for the 14th annual Clarendon Day. About 25 general exhibitors plus about that many artists lined the streets selling everything from jewelry to apparel, old magazines to framed artwork. If you spent a few minutes around the Clarendon Metro, or on the blocked portions of Wilson or Clarendon boulevards, you may have overheard neighbors running into one another. In front of Hard Times Cafe, one woman chastised her boyfriend: "We should've gotten here two hours ago!" The mouth-watering smell of ribs, chili, pizza, Thai food and made-on-the-spot doughnuts, among many other items, wafted through the air. The heart of Arlington will come alive Saturday for the 14th annual Clarendon Day – a street festival with music, food, arts and crafts plus family-friendly entertainment and morning runs for children and adults. “I think it’ll be a nice day,” said Matt Hussmann, executive director of the Clarendon Alliance. “The weather is supposed to be nice. It’s also fun just to come out and see all of your Clarendon neighbors. People bump into each other out on the street, and it’s nice just to sit down and chat, drink a beer and enjoy the music.” He added: “What’s not to like?
