Moran, Connolly Author Bill to Study Expanding Metro in Northern Virginia

House committee looking into possibility of extending Orange, Blue and Yellow lines.

Pipe dream or forward-thinking?  U.S. Reps. Gerry Connolly and Jim Moran have introduced a bill that would authorize studying Metrorail's possible expansion into Centreville and other areas of Northern Virginia.  The Northern Virginia Metrorail Extension Act, which is now before the House Committee on Transportation and Infrastructure, specifically cites the idea of extending the Orange Line into Centreville. It also proposes studying the possibility of extending the Yellow Line along the Route 1 corridor and the Blue Line along the Interstate 95 corridor to Woodbridge.  “Residents in Prince William and western Fairfax County already experience some of the longest commutes in the nation, and these communities will experience continued …

Commuter rail such as VRE is not a solution because VRE is currently at capacity. What makes this problem worse is that VRE shares the tracks it runs on with Amtrak and the owner of the line which also runs freight on that line. Arlington Residents Impressed by RUSH+

More service during peak hours opens more seats, space for riders.

Jamal Cooper had a seat on the train on his way home from work Tuesday evening for the first time in a while. Cooper, 28, of Arlington, believes the seat he sat in from Farragut West to Ballston along the Orange Line, was made available by Metro’s new RUSH+ program. The program, which started Monday, is expected to reduce crowding along the Green, Yellow, Blue and Orange lines. “I appreciate Metro adding more service along the line,” Cooper said. “This is something they should have done a while ago. This is going to make a lot of people happy." The program is expected to improve service for about 110,000 riders, with more than 46,000 of those customers along the Orange Line. 'Minor Derailment' Reported at Rosslyn Station

WMATA: Blue and Orange lines experiencing delays.

Update (12:50 a.m. Wednesday): Metro issued a statement that the Orange Line should run normally through the morning commute. Blue Line service has not yet been restored. Metro will issue another update on the Blue Line at about 4:30 a.m. Update (10:49 p.m.): Metro issued a release stating Blue and Orange line trains are operating "on or close to" a late-night schedule, though it remains unclear whether this will impact the morning commute. Approximately 1,000 people were aboard the train that derailed, according to Metro. Update (9:24 p.m.): Metro is encouraging riders to consider using the Yellow Line to travel between Virginia and Washington. Clarendon, Courthouse Metro Stations Closed This Weekend

Bus service will replace trains between Rosslyn and Virginia Square.

Free shuttle buses will replace train service on the Metro’s Orange Line starting at 10 p.m. Friday between Rosslyn and Virginia Square stations. The stations are closing to replace track switches near Clarendon station on the recommendation of the National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB). Here is some more information about travel on the Orange Line over the weekend: The last train from Vienna will depart 20 minutes earlier than normal -- at 2:07 a.m. on Friday and Saturday nights, and at 11:07 p.m. on Sunday and Monday nights.  Last train times from New Carrollton will not change.

McLean Man Struck by Train Last Week Dies

Metro believes incident was intentional.

The 39-year-old McLean man who was struck by a train at the Clarendon Metro station last week died this morning. Originally listed in serious condition, the man suffered head injuries and multiple broken bones. Metro officials believe the incident was intentional. "He walked a short distance into the tunnel and then placed himself into the path of the train," Metro spokesman Dan Stessel stated in an email. Stessel has said Metro does not identify individuals in cases they believe to be intentional. The incident happened during rush hour, clogging the Orange Line for hours. Passengers were eventually directed toward a series of shuttle buses to try to get home.

Metro Board Splits Blue Line During Rush Hour

Trains will be rerouted to the Yellow Line to alleviate Orange Line crowds.

Metro's board approved the plan to change Blue, Yellow and Orange Line rush hour service during a meeting Thursday. The Huffington Post reports that the "Blue Line split" will make more room for packed Orange Line trains during rush hour. Blue Line trains from Franconia-Springfield will be rebranded for Yellow Line Service and sent into the District of Columbia via the Yellow Line's Potomac River bridge. Weekend Track Work June 24-26 on Red, Orange, Blue and Yellow lines

Blue and Orange Line customers should allow about 20 minutes of additional travel time, according to the release.

Metro issued this release about weekend track work on the Red, Orange, Blue and Yellow lines:  "Metro will continue its effort to rebuild the Metrorail system this weekend on the Red, Orange, Blue and Yellow lines. The work will begin around 9:30 p.m. Friday, June 24, and continue through closing on Sunday, June 26.
