Tejada Elected Arlington Board Chairman; Housing, Healthy Lifestyles Among Priorities

New chairman announces series of town halls, town walks and other initiatives.

Walter Tejada became the new Arlington County Board chairman on Tuesday and unveiled an agenda that includes an increased focus on affordable housing and encouraging healthy lifestyles. Tejada was unanimously elected to the leadership post, which rotates annually, at the board's traditional New Year's Day organizational meeting. "The heart of Arlington is our community, our inclusion, diversity, mutual respect and sustainability," Tejada said in his remarks. "…So the question for us is how can we make it even better for all of Arlington?" The "moving forward together" agenda — or "juntos hacia adelante" as Tejada, an El Salvador native often referred to it — breaks down into four key focal areas: While all of these ideals have guided …

Arlington County Creates Online PLACE

The site is live now.

An online forum created for Arlington residents looks to create a virtual place to connect with the community. The community called PLACE Space is “aimed at encouraging civic conversations and facilitating community connections,” according to a press release from Arlington County. “PLACE Space is a virtual town square,” Arlington County Board Chair Mary Hynes said in a statement. “We hope that it encourages lots of interesting conversations about issues and connects people, organizations and businesses across the County.” The site was created as part of the county’s PLACE (Participation, Leadership and Civic Engagement) civil engagement initiative launched in January. To participate in conversations or join a circle of interest, users need…

Why no interviews and photos of the candidates for major public office? They were all at the County Fair talking with voters. How about letting us know what their views are about quality of life issues?   more ›

Arlington Launches PLACE Initiative to Increase Civic Engagement

Open house will be held Thursday night and Saturday morning.

Arlington County elected officials and representatives of a wide range of community organizations will gather at Artisphere this week to launch the PLACE initiative. PLACE -- Participation, Leadership And Civic Engagement -- is the brainchild of board Chairwoman Mary Hynes and is designed to help revamp and reinvigorate the Arlington Way. The Arlington Way got its name in the 1980s, but the practice of involving residents across the political and socio-economic spectrum goes back to the 1950s, Hynes said. People moved here to support America's efforts during World War II and they decided to stay -- and to find ways to get involved. "There's this long tradition of people who had all kinds of fancy titles downtown doing important national …

That said, the role of minorities in the Arlington Democratic machine is probably a good story in and of itself. I've got a few contacts with good stories who are back and forth about whether to talk on the record about their experiences.   more ›
