JV Generals Narrowly Lose to Yorktown Before Final Two Games

Patriots bested Generals 6-5 on Wednesday.

The JV Yorktown Patriots scored runs in each of the first three innings, built a 5-0 lead, and then hung on for a razor close 6-5 win over the Washington-Lee Generals at Greenbriar Park on Wednesday night. Collin Stuart's first inning solo home run was followed by Matt Rosenberg's two-run shot in the third. Washington-Lee clawed back in the fourth inning when Jeff Kruger doubled home Will Burgess and James Mellin knocked in Kruger for a 5-2 score. In the sixth inning, Paul Landini, Daniel Bowler and T.R. Sheehy all singled to load the bases and scored on Ben Buchholz's walk and Cameron Anderson's grounder into right field for a 5-5 tie. Yorktown's Parker Denny ignited the decisive seventh inning Patriot rally with a leadoff single, and …

Patriots Fight Valiantly, but Can't Topple Titans

Yorktown finishes season 17-9

Last Wednesday night’s matchup between the Yorktown Patriots and the Titans of T.C. Williams presented a clash of discipline and teamwork versus size and athleticism. On paper it looked as if the 22-5 Titans had the clear edge, but the contrasting style of the Patriots gave T.C. more of a test than many would have expected. Although the Titans won 56-43, they only led by four with just under four minutes remaining.Unfortunately for the Patriots, T.C. capitalized on a few mistakes down the stretch and knocked down their free throws to pull out the win. “In a close game like that, you have to make every possession count,” head coach Rich Avila said.  “We made a few careless mistakes, and you can’t do that against a team as good as T.C.” The …

Patriots Put Down Highlanders

Coach Rich Avila Earns 100th win

Yorktown head coach Rich Avila earned his 100th career win as the Patriots won 74-42 over the Mclean Highlanders in the first round of the regional tournament. Yorktown lost to Mclean earlier in the year, but with the higher-stakes and support of the home crowd, the Patriots were able to ride a huge third quarter run to a comfortable victory.  Sharpshooter Daniel Pietropaoli led the Patriots with 15 points, while fellow senior Kevin Bailey tallied one fewer. “We came in knowing any game could be our last,” Bailey said.  “And, we kept going hard to make sure we wouldn’t go home.” Senior leader Nicko Esherick got the Patriots going with two tough floaters in the lane, but Mclean quickly responded with a pair of threes over Yorktown’s 2-3 …

Patriots Prevail, Jags Stun Generals

Patriots travel to Mount Vernon, Lady Patriots to Edison.

On a Monday night packed with high school hoop action, the Yorktown Patriots won both games of their girls and boys playoff double header against Wakefield. Emily Rebh led the way for the ladies with 14 points and 10 rebounds, while Lena Negri and Mikayla Venson added 13 apiece.  Nicko Esherick led the boys with 18 points, including four clutch free throws to hold off a furious Wakefield comeback. The Patriots, as they so often do at home, came out on fire, led by the grat play of Nick Yore and Daniel Pietropaoli.  Yore established a strong low post presence with six quick points and three blocks, while Pietropaoli lit it up shooting the ball from the outside. “Wakefield came to play,” Pietropaoli said.  “We didn’t want to go home, so we …

National District Playoff Preview

Patriots face Warriors, Generals host Jags

It has been an up and coming season for all three Arlington high schools in a wide open National District.  After starting 6-0 in conference play, the Patriots lost four of their final eight games to slide to third place.  However, the Patriots are coming off one of their best performances of the year, a narrow 57-54 loss to the top seed Edison Eagles, nearly avenging the 28-point loss at home earlier in the year.  They will now gear up to take on the cross-town rival Wakefield Warriors, who have lost six of their last eight games, but are coming off a great win over Washington-Lee.  The Warriors have been inconsistent this year, but have earned some big wins, including a buzzer-beater victory over Edison, and a pair of overtime wins …

Yorktown Loses Heartbreaker, Finishes 3rd in the District

Last second shot denies Yorktown from a share of the title.

The Yorktown Patriots came into last night’s game knowing a victory over Edison would put them in a three-way tie for the regular season crown. After trailing by as many as 16 in the first half, the Patriots came roaring back in the second half. In one of the best finishes of the year thus far, the lead changed hands four-times in the final minute.  Unfortunately for the Patriots, it was the Eagles who prevailed, scoring the winning basket with under tens seconds left, then added another lay up at the buzzer to win 57-54.  Nicko Esherick and Kevin Bailey both scored 18 in defeat, and Jack Earley added 13. The Eagles had beaten Yorktown 56-28 on the road in December, and early Thursday night it looked as if a similar scoreline was on the …

High School Hoops Weekly Round-Up

Patriots and Generals Win 2 of 3 in a Critical Week of District Play

Washington-Lee (8-10, 6-5) It was an good week for the Washington-Lee Generals, who earned two important wins over Stuart and Hayfield, before losing to the first place Edison Eagles.  Jonah Sens led the way with 19 points in the 56-46 win over last place Stuart. In Wednesday night’s 50-47 victory at Hayfield, Andrew Karpinski hit the game winning 3-pointer with time winding down.  At 6-5 in district play, the Generals sit in fourth place, one win better than Wakefield entering the final week.  The two face off next Thursday in a game that could be pivotal for playoff positioning.  The Generals will first have to focus on Falls Church, who defeated Wakefield and lost to Yorktown by one this week. Yorktown Patriots (13-7, 9-3) It was an up …

Stars Shine on Senior Night

Patriot score 91, Lady Patriots win in Overtime

It was a night to remember for the Yorktown community, as the boys and girls basketball teams, dance team and cheerleaders were all honoring their beloved seniors.  The parents received roses before the game, and the boisterous student section was on hand with signs and body paint.  Following the Lady Patriots 46-39 overtime victory, and riding the emotion of the evening, the Patriots put up their best game of the year, crushing the Hayfield Hawks 91-50. “We came out with the mindset that this is a big game, and the last home game for us as seniors,” Kyle Bailey said.  “And that we needed to put on a show.”  From the opening tip off, the Patriots dominated all phases of the game.  Defensively, they completely disrupted the Hawks attack, …

Patriots Suffer Crushing Defeat to Mount Vernon

Third loss in five games takes Yorktown out of first place

When the Yorktown Patriots traveled to Mount Vernon in the first week of January, both teams were an undefeated 3-0 in conference play.  While the Patriots won that match 60-51, they did so against a Mount Vernon team that was without their leader Jesse Konadu.  This time around, Yorktown came in tied with Edison for first place, one game ahead of Mount Vernon.  On this night, it was the Majors who elevated their game and took home the convincing 77-61 victory, led by Konadu’s season-high 33 points.  Jack Earley led the Patriots with 18 in defeat, and Daniel Pietropaoli and Kevin Bailey added 14 and 13 respectively. Yorktown came out of the gates strong, hitting seven of their first eight shots from the field.  After hitting a three-…

Yorktown Holds off Late Rally to Defeat Falls Church

Patriots overcome poor start to win by 1.

The Yorktown Patriots came out sluggish Monday night, but were able to survive an off-night of shooting, and several second half rallies by the scrappy Falls Church Jaguars to win 52-51.  Daniel Pietorpaoli led a balanced Patriot attack with 13 points.  Kevin Bailey added nine, and three other Patriots scored eight.  Falls Church’s Nizar Alamin led all scorers with 24 points. The Patriots have not been playing their best ball as of late.  After being blown out by Edison two weeks ago they responded with a dominating win over Wakefield.  Coming off a heartbreaking loss to rival Washington-Lee, it was tough to tell which Yorktown team would come to play.  Early on, it did not look good for the Patriot faithful. It was unclear whether the …
