Video: Garvey Sworn In to Full Four-Year Term

Arlington County Board member Libby Garvey was sworn in to her first full four-year term on Friday. Ben Franklin, also known as Arlington resident Barry Stevens, delivered opening remarks. "Today, we recognize a commitment by a local citizen to serve in our government," he said. "Today, we celebrate the voice of an electorate in bringing this citizen into public office. And so, today, we consummate our republic and our democratic process." Garvey spoke on the American Revolution and the signers of the Declaration of Independence in her speech. Garvey Sworn In, Officially Takes Seat on Arlington Board

Garvey's term lasts through Dec. 31.

Democrat Libby Garvey was sworn in to office Wednesday afternoon, less than 24 hours after winning a special election to fill the vacant seat on the Arlington County Board. Garvey will serve out the remaining term left when former board member Barbara Favola ascended to the state Senate. Garvey's term lasts through Dec. 31. She must win a primary and general election later this year to hold the spot beyond that. Clerk of Court Paul Ferguson administered the oath of office to Garvey shortly after 5 p.m. Wednesday. About 100 people attended. "I feel very blessed to continue to serve as an elected official in this community," Garvey said. "And I'm honored to have so many other elected officials here with me.
