Longer Airport Security Lines, Fewer Flights with Sequestration

Sequestration could affect every traveler at airports nationwide, say U.S. Reps. Jim Moran, Gerry Connolly and U.S. Sen. Tim Kaine speaking from Reagan National Airport Monday.

Federal sequestration could mean fewer flights and increased wait times at airports, Virginia lawmakers said Monday. In addition to flight delays caused by sequestration, it threatens to close small- to mid-sized airports across the country. The massive, indiscriminate spending cuts Congress put in motion to force a budget compromise would cut $600 million from the Federal Aviation Administration if they go into effect Friday. Jobs on the Line Under sequestration, the FAA would have to furlough employees for 11 days — with as much as 10 percent of its workforce furloughed on any given day — and the agency would be unable to hire replacements for the 30 percent of its workers eligible to retire. Up to 2,200 air traffic controllers would be …

Report: National Airport Plans Millions in Upgrades to Terminal A

The airport has experienced growth in recent years, the Washington Examiner reports.

Ronald Reagan Washington National Airport’s growth has resulted in challenges for airport officials, who hope that millions in scheduled upgrades will meet the demand from passengers, according to the Washington Examiner. The Examiner reports that the airport has seen a 4.4 percent increase in passengers from the previous year as more airline carriers offer flights to National. To quell that demand, a $45 million upgrade that should be completed by the end of 2013 is planned for Terminal A. Read the full story in the Washington Examiner.

Man Sentenced for Indecent Exposure on Metro

Robert Lee Scott Jr., 48, of Capitol Heights, Md., was spotted masturbating on the Metro, according to police.

An online reporting tool helped Metro Transit Police catch a man who witnesses said was fondling himself on a train. Robert Lee Scott Jr., 48, of Capitol Heights, Md., was charged with two counts of indecent exposure within the Metrorail system in the July 26 incident. Ex-Senate Candidate Merrick Appointed to Airport Authority

WaPo: MWAA reviewing legality of appointment.

Republican Caren Merrick, the McLean businesswoman who ran unsuccessfully for the state Senate this year, has been appointed to the Metropolitian Washington Airport Authority. Gov. Bob McDonnell announced the appointment of Merrick and Todd Stottlemyer of Oak Hill to the authority on Wednesday. The move is in line with McDonnell's long-term approach to having more say on regional transit boards, and follows successful legislation spearheaded by U.S. Rep. Frank Wolf, R-Va., to expand the MWAA board from 13 to 17 members, according to the Washington Post. The MWAA board opposed Wolf's effort and is reviewing the legality of the governor's appointments, the Post reports. The authority oversees Dulles International and Ronald Reagan Washington…

Airplane Noise Leads to Sleepless Nights in Radnor/Fort Myer Heights

A solution is still months away.

For some Arlington residents, the next six months will pass one low rumble at a time. The Radnor/Fort Myer Heights Civic Association, which represents people living between Wilson Boulevard and Arlington National Cemetery from the Potomac River as far west as Courthouse Road, met with representatives of Ronald Reagan Washington National Airport on Tuesday to discuss increased airplane noise and its adverse effect on their community. Many residents said they often were unable to sleep due to planes flying overhead at all hours of the night. One woman even said she sometimes sees landing lights in her bedroom and can’t sleep with her windows open due to the noise. “It’s only temporary,” said Mike Jeck, assistant manager of Washington …

Olga Colley We just moved to a new house in Rosslyn. We love the place but the airplane noise makes it impossible for us to enjoy our life here. When my 2 yrs. old son can't fall asleep during his nap time because of the planes, he cries and asks to turn it off. This is not only a problem during night hours, it is all day long.   more ›
