USS Arlington Commissioning Committee Seeks Volunteers, Cash

Commission hopes to raise $500,000.

The USS Arlington's Commissioning Committee is looking for a few good volunteers. The group hopes to raise about $500,000, most of which is going toward a room on the ship that will pay tribute to the first responders to the Pentagon on 9/11. “It will have commemorative things from 9/11 and some information about Arlington County itself,” said Mary Wagoner, who volunteers with the committee.  Funds also will go toward a celebration meal for members of the crew the weekend of the commissioning, she said. “We will take as many volunteers as we can get,” Wagoner said. “It’s quite an honor to have a ship named for your county and we want to create that community bond with the ship.” The USS Arlington is one of three ships commemorating the …

Group Helping Wounded Warriors Seeks Volunteers to Gift Wrap

Volunteers are needed from Dec. 7 through Dec. 27 at the Fashion Centre at Pentagon City.

A group that helps wounded warriors is looking for volunteers this holiday season to wrap gifts for customers at the Fashion Centre at Pentagon City. “It’s been very helpful in helping us run the programs throughout the year,” said Michelle Humphries, founder and director of Arms Outstretched Ministry, a Stafford-based nonprofit. The group’s annual gift wrapping event, now in its fourth year, helps fund programs for those in the military and their families. The cost for giftwrapping services ranges anywhere from $4 to $10, and guests will often leave additional donations to help the group, Humphries said. The organizations’ wounded warrior program provides catered meals and recreational opportunities for troops. The group also runs an …

Meet Goldie - The Sweet and Fluffy Puppy

Goldie Locks is sweet, playful, energetic and eager to please.

Since the loss of power in our region prevented so many from meeting Goldie last week, we are featuring this lovable pup again.  We hope your power is back on, or will be very soon. _____ Hey there. My name is Goldie Locks, but my rescue friends all call me Goldie. I’m a Golden Retriever-Chow mix and weigh about 45 pounds, but still have some filling out to do. I’m only a year old and very much a puppy—sweet, playful, energetic and eager to please. I was rescued out of a shelter in Maryland, after being picked up as a stray. It's hard to believe that no one came looking for me, but here I am ready to find my new family and start my new life. Mutts Matter set me up with a seasoned foster mom, who started working with me right away on basic …

Serving Breakfast and Hugs for the Homeless

Local volunteers and A-Span serve the homeless weekly at Central United Methodist Church in Ballston.

Every Friday by 6 a.m. Jean and Gene Cross are in the basement of Central United Methodist Church in Ballston preparing breakfast for Arlington’s homeless. The husband and wife team who jokingly refer to themselves, as the “two Jeans” have been regular volunteers of the church’s breakfast program since its inception three years ago.  “People were already waiting at six today,” said Jean. “They will come in and they’re willing to help us with some of the tasks, like peeling potatoes and chopping onions and everybody is having a good time.” The meal is served from 8 a.m. until noon.   One of those waiting to come in from the cold weather was a homeless man who had spent the night outside. “Everything he had with him froze but his after-shave…

Arlington Organization Collects Donated Bicycles for Africans in Need

Schools and other Washington area locations, including Washington-Lee High School, collected bicycles Saturday for Africans in need of transportation to reach valuable life resources.

Could you imagine what your life might be like if the only way to receive food, water and medical supplies for you and your family was by walking a considerable distance? Here in Ballston-Virginia Square, that experience may be hard to envision, but it is a reality for many people in Africa. That's why Arlington student Winston Duncan started Wheels to Africa, an organization that works with local youth, ages 10-18, to collect bicycles and send them to charities and non-government agencies in Uganda, Kenya and Tanzania. Recipients of the bikes use them to reach school, food, water and medical care. The organization also aims to educate children and youth about how their quality of life compares to those who do not have the same resources …

Just a Phone Call Away

CrisisLink is an Arlington-based nonprofit organization.

For Kayla Fang, being a volunteer with CrisisLink has been a "life-changing" experience. Every week for a few hours Fang works with the nonprofit by answering phone calls to the hotline. Answering those critical calls for help is one of the services provided by the Arlington-based nonprofit organization whose mission is to save lives and prevent tragedies by providing immediate assistance to individuals facing serious life crises, trauma and suicide. "I always think that people don't think enough about how to be there for someone," Fang said. "A lot of times they really want to, but they don't know how." The 22-year-old software engineer explained that she was drawn to the work after facing personal challenges with friends and family …
