National Science Foundation Will Continue to Call Ballston Home, For Now

The federal government is considering moving the National Science Foundation to a less expensive location.

The National Science Foundation is keeping its headquarters in Ballston for the next five years after a search for alternate, less expensive locations in the Washington area. The General Services Administration is allowing the NSF to continue operating out of its headquarters at 4121 and 4201 Wilson Blvd., according to the Washington Business Journal. U.S. Rep. Jim Moran, D-Va., has worked on keeping the NSF in Arlington and said Monday that work will continue. “I am pleased that NSF’s lease at its current location has been extended,” Moran said in a statement to Patch. “Now we turn our attention to achieving long-term certainty for this important federal research agency. NSF is a cornerstone of the Ballston ‘science corridor,’ also home …

Ovechkin, Pontius, Wall to be Featured as Augmented Reality Statues

The Ballston Business Improvement District will unveil the statues next month at the annual Taste of Arlington.

Want to have your picture taken with Washington Capitals team captain Alex Ovechkin, Washington Wizards point guard John Wall or D.C. United midfielder Chris Pontius? The Ballston Business Improvement District, or BID, wants to make that a reality — an augmented reality, actually. The BID will unveil a series of augmented reality statues at this year's Taste of Arlington, which will be from noon to 5 p.m. on May 19. The "statues" are actually 15-second video loops of Ovechkin, Wall or Pontius in different poses that can be accessed by downloading the BID's app and targeting one of the augmented reality markers. The markers are similar to quick response or QR codes that smartphones and tablets are able to scan. So if you stand next to the …

Ballston in 2013: More WiFi, More Parks and Augmented Reality

Ballston Business Improvement District undertakes agressive 'placemaking' campaign.

Coming soon to Ballston: More WiFi hotspots, more public gathering spaces, several beautification efforts and a virtual showcase of area innovators. It's all part of an aggressive placemaking push by the Ballston Business Improvement District, or BID — separate but complimentary to a new "where minds meet" marketing campaign and LaunchPad challenge for area entrepreneurs that kicked off last week. "Now, we're rolling," said Tina Leone, chief executive of the BID, later adding "How do we connect our parks? How do we make the public experience more pleasurable in Ballston?" The BID has several ideas. First on the table is increasing the number of WiFi hotspots in the roughly five-block radius around the Ballston Metro. The BID also wants to …

Moran 'Optimistic' NSF Will Remain in Ballston

Efforts to keep NSF and land FBI are wholly unrelated, congressman says.

U.S. Rep. Jim Moran, who has spent months working to keep the National Science Foundation in Arlington, is optimistic that work will pay off. "People have come to the conclusion that the best location is right near where they are — in the Ballston corridor," Moran told Patch last week following a news conference about Virginia's efforts to land the new FBI headquarters. "I think the NSF is going to stay in Ballston," he said, noting the number of its employees who live within a short distance of the facility. Moran, who brought together Northern Virginia leaders with a "singular focus" of landing the new FBI headquarters in Virginia, said the two projects were wholly unrelated. Arlington is perhaps the only jurisdiction in Northern …

Don't you think that Ballston is going through a makeover? The addition of DARPA and other buidlings at the 4000 block of Wilson Blvd, the Va Tech building at the corner of Glebe and Wilson, the new Harris Teeter coming to the corner of Carlin Springs and Glebe. Yes, Ballston Common needs to be updated, but it will come. Everything is not going to happen all at the same time. The mall will …   more ›
