Virginia senator said his three daughters asked him Friday what he was going to do about school shootings.
U.S. Sen. Mark Warner, D-Va., wants to tighten gun laws, saying "enough is enough" in the wake of the Connecticut school shootings Friday that saw 20 young children and six adults killed. “I‘ve been a strong supporter of Second Amendment rights," Warner said Monday in Richmond, according to The Washington Post. “I’ve got an A rating from the NRA. But the status quo isn’t acceptable. I’ve got three daughters," Warner said. "They asked me on Friday evening, ‘Dad, what are you gonna do about this?’ There’s got to be a way to put reasonable restrictions, particularly as we look at assault weapons, as we look at these fast clips of ammunition.” Warner said the ability to hunt is "part of our culture" on Richmond's CBS affiliate. The Alexandria …

Warner says he wants to continue his work in the U.S. Senate.
U.S. Sen. Mark Warner, D-Va., announced Tuesday that he will not run for governor in 2013, saying that he wants to continue the work he was sent to do in Washington. Warner, in a statement issued shortly after 3 p.m., said Virginians of all political stripes have approached him over the past year to make the bid — which he said he would consider and then make a decision after the November election. "I’ve talked to a lot of Virginians I respect, and I’ve talked about it with my family," Warner said in a statement. "But when I asked Virginians to hire me as their Senator, I made a promise to come to Washington to try to be a problem solver. I have to admit, it’s been tougher than I expected. But I’ve tried to keep at it." Warner's decision…

State party convention drew more than 2,000 to the city of Fairfax this weekend.
FAIRFAX — Perhaps U.S. Sen. Mark Warner put it best: "In 2008, we changed the guard. In 2012, we need to guard the change." More than 2,000 Democrats from across the commonwealth descended on George Mason University this weekend for the Democratic Party of Virginia's State Convention. The gathering served as part pep rally, part organizational meeting as activists mobilize for November. Party leaders had similar messages, previewing what they will try to hammer home while Virginia is in the national spotlight as a battleground state for the U.S. presidency. That message, they say, is that the right-wing takeover of the Republican Party has made this country, and this state, unrecognizable and infringes on the rights of gays, women and …

The former governor and U.S. Senate candidate toured Courthouse-based OPower and called that company's story "inspirational."
A little over five years ago, Dan Yates and Alex Laskey were trying to figure out where they should start their business — OPower, a business that would work with utility companies to help their customers conserve energy and save money. “Consistently, going from person to person, we got feedback that Virginia was a great place to start a business,” Yates told a small crowd of Northern Virginia business leaders Wednesday. “That’s an applause line,” U.S. Senate candidate and former Gov. Tim Kaine interjected. The crowd chuckled and complied. Kaine and U.S. Sen. Mark Warner, D-Va., toured OPower before meeting with more than 30 area business leaders last week. It was the first day of Kaine’s two-week tour of Virginia in which he’s laying out …

Public-private partnership looks at ways to work with counterparts across the pond.
Virginia Tech kicked off what officials hope is a long-term partnership between the United States and the United Kingdom this week at its new state-of-the-art research center in Ballston. “The goal… is to begin the international discussion regarding collaboration when it comes to advanced manufacturing,” said Don Leo, the school’s associate vice president for research in the National Capital Region. The four-day meeting began in Chicago and culminated in Arlington between the Commonwealth Center for Advanced Manufacturing, or CCAM, and similar research efforts in the United Kingdom. CCAM joins Virginia Tech, the University of Virginia and Virginia State University with seven private companies – including Rolls-Royce North America and Canon…

Webb, Warner, Moran and Connolly question DoD Transportation Management and Occupation Plans for Mark Center property
Today, U.S. Reps. Jim Moran (D-8), Gerry Connolly (D-11) and Democratic Senators Jim Webb and Mark Warner sent a letter of concern to Secretary of Defense Leon Panetta. They're worried that Interstate 395 will be a traffic-choked mess because of inadequate transportation planning at the Mark Center by the Department of Defense. The Base Realignment and Closure move at the Mark Center property near I-395 and Seminary Road, is home to Washington Headquarters Services, which will receive 5,000 of its 6,400 total relocated employees by this December. Known as BRAC #133, the project has been viewed with skepticism. "We are concerned that the Department’s occupation plan is not being adequately coordinated with appropriate transportation …

The problem as I see it, is not with the guns that were used in Newtown. The problem was that the gun owner DID NOT SECURE HER WEAPONS. If she had the only available key to a gun safe on her or in a truly secret place, this would not have happened the way that it did.   more ›
