Traffic, Community Facilities Among Concerns for New Elementary School

With much still to do, school is slated to open by September 2015.

Three months of concept work on a new elementary school in North Arlington has turned into five, but school officials remain confident that the project will be finished in time to open by September 2015. The school's impact on the surrounding neighborhoods — specifically, on the traffic — is a concern, as evidenced during a two-hour briefing the Arlington County Board received Thursday night. County leaders, too, want the sports fields on the Williamsburg Middle School campus — where the new elementary school will be located — to be true community facilities. So far, Arlington Public Schools doesn't have the money in its budget to realize that, School Board Member Abby Raphael said. The two bodies also talked about design and community …

First priority mus be school security....why are new schools designed as regional sports, recreation,entertainment, community centers with classrooms? Where's the school security? It's an oxymoron. Moreover, if the people who run Arlington were responsible they wouldn't be packing more people into a tiny county that's already overcrowded. Where is the common sense? There isn't any. Public Meeting Thursday to Address Traffic Impact of New Williamsburg School

Arlington Public Schools plans two new elementary schools and three school expansions to cope with the increasing demands on its capacity.

Arlington Public Schools is holding a community meeting Thursday night regarding a traffic impact study for a new $35 million elementary school planned for the Williamsburg Middle School campus. The meeting is for parents and community members. It's 7 to 9 p.m. Thursday at the Williamsburg Middle School auditorium, 3600 N. Harrison St. "There are some concerns of traffic in that area — just that adding an elementary school to the area is going to increase traffic for the neighborhood," schools spokesman Frank Bellavia said. Specific projections as to how many more cars are expected on the roads in the surrounding community are not yet available, Bellavia said.
