Bishop O'Connell President to Step Down in June

Prebble does not give a reason for her departure.

Bishop O'Connell High School President Katy Prebble announced Monday that she will resign in June at the end of the current school year. Prebble has served as the school's president since July 2010. Her resignation letter does not indicate a reason for leaving, and a school spokeswoman did not immediately respond to queries beyond what was in a news release late Monday. "I have been inspired by O'Connell's spirit and traditions and am a better person for being guided by the (Servants of the Immaculate Heart of Mary) Sisters," Prebble stated. "Many of you may know that years ago Mother Teresa visited O'Connell and spoke to our students. Her message of love and compassion continues to fill the heart of our community. I will faithfully serve …

Bishop O'Connell Students, Alumni Rally to Support Fired Teacher

Harrison was 'like a father to all of us,' student organizer says.

About 250 students gathered Thursday along Little Falls Road across from Bishop Denis J. O'Connell High School to protest the firing of a teacher who has had a deep and lasting impact on those he taught — and even those he didn't. John Harrison, an attorney and adjunct professor at Georgetown University, until this week taught world history and practical law at Bishop O'Connell. He also was the moderator for the SADD (Students Against Destructive Decisions) club, a mentor, and had a reputation among students as someone they could talk to when they were distressed. "He literally is the face of our high school," said Julie Olafsson, a 17-year-old junior from McLean who organized today's demonstration. "He's like a father to all of us. It …

UPDATE: Duesterhaus' Car Found In Rosslyn Parking Garage

Search continues for Vienna native, former O'Connell teacher

Update, 10:51 a.m., Sunday, July 31: An email from Rich Duesterhaus, Tom Duesterhaus' father, said the car was found in a commercial parking garage near the Rosslyn Metro station. And he wrote that the family had a reunion last weekend that had been planned since January. "Tom's siblings had hoped that he might return for that but of course that did not happen," Richard Duesterhaus wrote. "Finding the car does not seem to have helped us at all with where Tom went or is at this time," he wrote. "Since we already were 99% sure he was in VA Beach on [June] 18th the location of the car since the 17th doesn't shed much light other than he chose not to take the Youth Apostle Institute car." He said that his family hopes his son will show up. "…

Video: Students, Coworkers Ask Duesterhaus To Come Home

Wednesday vigil for missing teacher draws Bishop O'Connell alumni, students, teachers, friends

Friends, colleagues and current and former students of Tom Duesterhaus didn't come to Tuckahoe Park on Wednesday night for answers. They knew the 37-year-old Vienna native and McLean resident went missing June 17 and hasn't been spotted for at least a week now – likely, his family believes, because he was devastated by the news his contract would not be renewed at Bishop O'Connell High School, his alma mater and also where he taught English for more than a decade. They still don't know why his contract wasn't renewed; why he chose to disappear without saying goodbye; or where he's headed next. They didn't come to dwell on these things, but instead to pray, give thanks and keep hope. With guitars, candles, flowers and hand-written notes, …

This vigil was perfect. If Mr. D were here it's exactly what he would have coordinated if another teacher went missing. He might now be here right now, but the impact he had on us is obviously present.   more ›

At Prayer Service, Family, Friends Of Duesterhaus 'Wrestle With Situation That Doesn't Make Sense'

Community prepares for possible "long period of reflection" after son, friend, teacher disappears

Tom Duesterhaus was never one for accolades: He taught, worked with troubled youth and served in community organizations because that’s just who he was; that’s what he thought he was supposed to do, his father Rich said. So he would likely never dream of the scene that unfolded at Our Lady of Good Counsel Catholic Church on Tuesday night, where a few hundred family members and friends gathered to pray for a sign that their missing son, brother, teacher and friend was okay. “I believe we also have to recognize that Tom would not have expected this kind of outpouring of support for him. Tom would just expect us to go on with our own everyday responsibilities,” Rich Duesterhaus said from the altar toward the end of the service. “I think we …

How easy it is to formulate a tidy analysis, as Mr. Giunta has done. That does not mean it's correct, or completely so, or as simple as Mr. Giunta would have it. It is human nature to speculate, but out of respect for Tom, I respectfully object to such a glib summation which, in addition to carrying more than a hint of blame, leaves no room for the nuances of the human mind and the ways of …   more ›

Students Hold Candlelight Vigil for Duesterhaus

Bishop O'Connell students are holding a candlelight "wishing" vigil for missing teacher Tom Duesterhaus, Wednesday night at O'Connell.

Update: Event is now at Tuckahoe park, 2400 North Sycamore Street, in Arlington.  Past and present Bishop O'Connell students, and former students of missing English teacher Tom Duesterhaus, are holding a candlelight vigil at Tuckahoe Park in his honor tomorrow, according to a Facebook event.  The event creators noted that this is not a memorial service, but rather a "wishing service" for Duesterhaus' safe return. The vigil will take place at 7:30 p.m. Duesterhaus, who has been missing since Friday, June 17, was last seen in Virginia Beach. According to relatives, Duesterhaus was supposed to start a four-day retreat in Virginia Beach on Monday, June 20.  O'Connell administrators confirmed to Patch that Duesterhaus is no longer an O'Connell …

Prayer Service Planned For Duesterhaus

Family, friends organize Tuesday event to pray for missing man's safety

Friends and family of Tom Duesterhaus, the 37-year-old Vienna native and McLean resident who disappeared last week, are planning a prayer service at his childhood church in Vienna.  The service is planned for 7:30 p.m. Tuesday at Our Lady of Good Counsel Catholic Church, 8601 Wolftrap Road, in Vienna. Friends, colleagues and students are encouraged to attend to pray for Duesterhaus' safety and well-being, family said. Duesterhaus never returned to the McLean home he shared with other Youth Apostles last Friday night. He was spotted three times in Virginia Beach in the two days that followed. Bishop O'Connell High School administrators confirmed on Saturday that Duesterhaus is no longer an employee at the school. It's not clear when …
