Arlington Ranks No. 1 for Successful, Educated Single Women

Census data places Arlington ahead of Alexandria and DC, according to Redfin.

What does success look like in Arlington? Chances are, just like the young woman you asked out the other night at Whitlow's.

According to a new report from real estate brokerage Redfin, Arlington is the No. 1 place in the United States for single, educated and successful women.

"Now more than ever, single women are benefiting from the hard-won advances their mothers' generation made," Redfin real estate economist Ellen Haberle wrote in the Huffington Post.

Redfin used Census data to compare the percentage of women with four-year college degrees, women with annual salaries of $65,000 or more and women who single between the ages of 25 and 39.

In the Top 25 cities for single, successful women, Arlington placed ahead of Alexandria (No. 2), Cambridge, Mass. (No. 3), Washington, D.C. (No. 4) and San Francisco (No. 5).

The brokerage lists the Defense Department as a top employer of young, successful women here and compiled the following statistics about Arlington:

  • 69 percent of women over 25 have a four-year bachelor's degree or higher.
  • 49 percent of working-age women (15 and older) earn an annual salary of $65,000 or more.
  • 24 percent of women are single and between 25 and 39 years old.
  • Arlington has a 6-percent surplus of 25- to 39-year-old single men.

Redfin used U.S. Census American Community Survey data from 2007 to 2011 for its analysis of cities with more than 100,000 people.

Top-tier employer information was based on Federal Election Commission donor data, according to Redfin.
