For Sale: WJLA, NewsChannel 8

Arlington-based Allbritton Communications Co. announced Wednesday that it could sell television stations in seven markets to focus more on Politico and similar ventures.

Arlington-based Allbritton Communications Co. announced Wednesday that it is exploring the sale of television stations in seven markets, including WJLA and NewsChannel 8.

Chairman Robert Allbritton said that the shift away from television will allow the company to focus more on Politico, which it also owns, and similar ventures, according to the Huffington Post.

“Let me be unmistakably clear to you and potential buyers: There is no chance, none, I will sell POLITICO as part of the deal. My future is POLITICO and companies like it. In fact, my plan is to invest even more in POLITICO and to place additional bets on media companies that meet my definition of successful journalistic and business enterprises," Allbritton said in a memo obtained by Huffington Post.

The two Washington-area channels, which are housed in Rosslyn along with Politico, brought in about half of the Allbritton television group's revenue over the last three years, according to the Washington Post.

Other channels that could be included in a potential sale are WHTM in Harrisburg, Pa., KATV in WSET in Lynchburg, Va., and WCIV in Charleston, S.C.
